A Successful Treatment Program for Fibromyalgia Patients

Twenty four years working with fibromyalgia patients has given me the opportunity to learn from many successes along with failures. Since 2005 through trial and error, I finally developed what has turned out to be a very successful protocol. I have patients that have been symptom free for 7 years enjoying a normal state of living. Returning to work and enjoying activities previously only dreamed of, such as unrestricted exercise and vacationing, with no negative symptomatic reactions. Normalcy is indeed within their grasp.

The protocol involves two parts. The first that I will be covering will be the pre-protocol that concentrates on a gentle detox and a reduction of inflammation.

Most if not all fibromyalgia patients are toxic from a bad diet, pharmaceutical medication, a lack of exercise, other health conditions or a combination of these or other factors. By removing or reducing the toxicity, the patient will be able to absorb proper nutrients and allow their body to respond more quickly to the second part of the protocol that actually deals with the condition. The detox is in a powder form that when added to water and fruit turns into a high protein, highly nutritious smoothie type drink that gently removes toxins from the liver and kidneys.

The reduction of inflammation involves the “temporary” removal of those items most commonly found to be the cause of inflammation in the body. The program involves a restricted hypoglycemic diet. (THIS IS NOT A STARVATION PROGRAM). I thought I would add this before anyone starts to moan and groan.
What is being removed from the patient’s diet for about two and one-half weeks are the following: SUGAR (including those fake sugars), GLUTEN (wheat, rye, barley, malt), TRANS FATTY ACIDS (mainly red meat and boxed items known as Omega-6) and DAIRY PRODUCTS.

After the detox, patients are instructed to add one food every 72 hours. This allows the patient to find what foods cause a reaction such as itchy, scratchy, sneezy, dopy, headaches and all the other symptoms people have from foods that cause a bad reaction in their system. If the food causes a bad reaction then the patient is obviously instructed to stay away from that food. Why 72 hours you might ask? Once a food is ingested, it takes about 60 to 65 hours to digest and go through the system. After 72 hours another food is added.

During this detox period, the patients are also instructed to take Omega-3 fish oil. A minimum of 3000mg of EPA, the anti-inflammatory portion, and minimum 2000mg DHA, the portion that stimulates brain fibers that allow the individual to think more clearly. For fibromyalgia patients this means a great improvement in their “fibro fog.”

Other supplements that are part of the protocol include Magnesium, malic acid and cojugated linoleic acid.  Magnesium, 600mg, is used to stimulate the production of ATP for energy. For fibromyalgia patients this is essential due to the usual heavy fatigue fibromyalgia patients must deal with.

Malic acid is one of the most common natural anti-inflammatory supplements available. It is found in many foods and comes from a very popular fruit. (HINT: An apple a day keeps the doctor away!).

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) has been discussed in many published research papers from leading schools including Tufts University. It increases your metabolic rate and burns fat if you are active or not. For most if not all fibromyalgia patients, this is essential due to their lack of activity. Extended periods of inactivity cause a loss of lean tissue that is replaced by fat. You may weigh the same but your fat to lean tissue ratio will favor fat.

The nutritional supplements that we offer are all physician grade. This is the purest grade available. There are a lot of supplements on the market that do not have this classification which means you may be purchasing products that are not what they say they are.

In review, the pre-protocol lasts 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. During this time the patient goes through a gentle liver and kidney detox along with an overall reduction in inflammation, pain, weight, fatigue and an increase in mental clarity.

If you have any questions about this protocol, please contact me. I also have an informative “Introduction to Fibromyalgia,” talk with Q&A every Wednesday evening from 5:30-6:30pm. Call 480-948-4955 to R.S.V.P. as attendance is limited to ensure all questions are answered.

To your health!

  1. I am curious as to what your thoughts are concerning coconut oil? I’ve read on several related blogs about it’s potential benefits against chronic pain symptoms. Is it something you’d recommend during a protocol like this one?

    • Hello Stephen.

Thus far everything I have read concerning coconut oil has been positive. For my fibromyalgia patients and any other patients who have high levels of inflammation we place them on a restricted hypoglycemic diet along with a gentle detox program for 2 to 3 weeks. Fresh coconut is part of the prescribed accepted diet which would also include coconut oil as long as it is pure.

  2. Will you please send me the diet that I must follow to detox

    • Hello Marie.

Thank you for your request. The diet is a restricted hypoglycemic diet that removes sugar, gluten, trans-fatty acids and dairy products from your diet. You must stay away from these foods for 3 weeks to have the program work properly. After three weeks you add one food from the restricted list every 72 hours and check for any reaction after ingesting the food such as itchy, sneezy, headachey, intestinal reaction. Sometimes the reaction can occur within minutes or longer. If you have a reaction to the food you must stop eating it. For the diet to work you really should go through a liver/kidney detox during this 3 week period. There are a number of them available on the market. Depending on the patient we use two that are only available through physicians because of there purity. Presently the two companies products are from Metagenics and Xymogen. For more information check my website for previous posts that I have made or obtain my book through Amazon, Barnes and Noble or e-book. It explains the program in detail.
Thank you so very much for your interest.

    • Hello Marie
I sent you a lengthy reply on your request concerning my diet detox. Not sure you received it. Let me know if you have received my reply.
      Thank you very much.

  3. At this point if you told me to stand on my head for three weeks and I would feel better I would be willing to try it. What meal plan do you suggest while a person is eliminating the sugar, gluten, fats and dairy? I have terrible craving for carbs and sweets. Cravings that call my name from the pantry and as a mother of 6 it is hard to completely eliminate those types of items from my home. Thank you for your time!
