More and more research has validated that the symptoms of fibromyalgia derive from the same source — inflammation. This process is often insidious, yet it eventually fulminates into a disease like fibromyalgia. This inflammatory process usually attacks the weakest area and can affect any organ or tissue in the body. It may eventually affect the entire body as is the case with fibromyalgia. No matter how many pills, potions, injections, organ stimulants or other medical treatments are administered, it won’t get to the root of the problem. In short, we must attack the cause of the condition, not just provide temporary relief.
Over the past 40 years, I have successfully treated over 4,500 fibromyalgia patients with a protocol that includes the treatment with a simple medication called guaifenesin (gwa fen e sen). Many years ago, quite by accident, I discovered that uricosuric drugs (used to treat gout) also work for fibromyalgia. I must stress, however, that fibromyalgia and gout have no connection.
While the old uricosuric gout medications are no longer in use, I do prescribe guaifenesin, a safer medication that may be used even for children. Guaifenesin is an innocuous component of many cold and cough preparations added to liquefy mucus. It is our most potent drug to date for reversing fibromyalgia.
Having stumbled onto an effective treatment, it seemed appropriate to formulate a theory based on results. Upon analyzing 24-hour urine samples of my patients, both before and after treatment, I found a significant increase in the excretion of phosphate and moderate increase of oxalate and calcium after guaifenesin was started. I suspected that the cells of fibromyalgics retain abnormal amounts of these substances that should have been excreted by the kidneys. The abnormality, which may be due to an inherited enzymatic deficiency, leads to symptoms fibromyalgics experience in so many tissues and areas of the body. Guaifenesin treatment reverses the entire process of fibromyalgia in a more intense cyclic progressive fashion. This is due to a rapid attack on multiple areas simultaneously.
